Move around the corporation (1)
Today is your first day in the new job at a big corporation. Congratulations!
You should go to other departments to bump into new people. You will start building valuable bridges across the corporation that will help your career advancement.

Armed with a big smile and your self-introduction you should explore the corporation by moving around.
Your first weeks are a great opportunity to venture into areas of the building or the offices where you might not go again in the future. You can go into the elevator and step out any time. You will land in a random floor. Walk around the floor noticing what is there.
You have a big smile in your face and say hello to the people you cross on your way. You will notice that some of them will just say hello and move on. However, someone will be open to have a short chat. In that case, your first weapon has worked: your smile.
Now you should use your second weapon: your self-introduction. You state you started your job recently and introduce yourself. The other person might do likewise. This can lead into a brief conversation of their department and its relationship with yours. You might uncover some opportunities for collaboration between the departments or some ways your previous expertise can help that person or his/her department.
In the next post I will give some hints to avoid a common pitfall: be seen as a wanderer!
