Say ‘Hello’ from your advisers

Today you start your new job at a corporation and previously got your “network seeds” ready (see my previous post).

From the very first day at the corporation, you will contact several people on behalf of your “advisers” (see “Growing your network, one node at a time” for clarification on what I call an “adviser”).
Do this preferably by phone or in person. Only use email if it is absolutely the only medium available. Thanks to such a referral, I was able to contact the Chief Technical Officer during my first week at a corporation with 10,000+ employees.

As you talk to these referrals, as well as to your new colleagues, you should ask them about their role. In doing so, you will gather ideas on how you can help them and the corporation. Always keep in mind that you need to provide value to nurture your network. There are many ways you can help, among others:

  • Introduce them to your contacts outside the corporation.
  • Share articles and information, particularly if you come form a different industry.
  • Share ideas from your previous jobs that can help them in their work. Do it in a non-threatening way. Just share the ideas, don’t push them!

Enjoy your new job!
