Networking across generations? Take the extra steps!

When you are the Networker, you adapt to the Advisers and Referrals! This applies even more when there is a generational gap between you.

The following happened to me last week…

I had a first meeting with a referral who was highly placed in his national corporation. That corporation shows a small but constant growth while retaining a conservative image.
The meeting went extremely well and we exchanged business cards.

Back at my office, I was about to write a “thank you email” when… Oh surprise! The business card had no email address on it! It had only a postal address and a phone number. By the way, the cards had also been printed using an old fashioned font.

That “thank you email” was transformed into an “old fashioned postal letter”. This required several extra steps: printing the letter, printing the label for the envelope, finding the appropriate stamp (remember stamps?), putting everything together and finally finding a mailbox…!

Of course the reverse situation also applies: when a “Baby Boomer” needs to network with a “Generation X” or even a “Generation Y”. The “Baby Boomer” might need to take extra steps to create an email account or even a Twitter account…

Please, always take as many extra steps as are necessary when your interlocutor belongs to a different generation.
