What is networking… Find the way that suits you best
Networking is sometimes misunderstood!
A good friend told me last week, “You’re not going to start a blog on how to (ab)use your personal connections for professional gain, are you?”. And no, I’m not starting such a blog. This blog is about tools and techniques to improve your networking. Networking as leveraging your relationships for mutual gain. Of course it is not using (or abusing) your personal relationships (neighbours, family, others) for professional gain. (Note: This does not mean that I think that you cannot develop friendships with your business contacts or that you cannot talk business with your friends. In a few weeks, I´ll write another post on that subject).
Of course, sales techniques share something with “non-sales networking”. There is lots of literature about sales techniques. In this blog we will not dive into sales techniques but keep most of the content related to networking for non-sales professionals. Please, do not go into “sales mode” when you are networking… remember it is about “mutual gain”!
Is networking an art or a science? Or maybe a bit of both?
What are the top three mistakes most of us make when networking?
What is more important the size or the quality of my network?
How do I build professional relationships once I’ve moved into a new city? Taken a new job in a big organisation? Started a consulting business on my own and need more referrals?
Should I go into social networking web platforms or should I keep my plain old paper phone book?
Should I…?
This blog will answer these questions and more, but keep in mind that there is no single answer, there is no right or wrong.
You have to find the way that suits you best… this blog might help you…
